That Hasselt University and the three university colleges PHL, KHLim and Xios performe excellent research is already known. But the quality and excellence of the medical-scientifical research performed by our hospitals was perhaps less well known. Recently the results of some of these research projects were published in various national and international media.

May 31th saw the launch of two new products of the joint-venture of three companies from Limburg: Global Medics from Meldert (development), Aminolabs from Hasselt (production) and 2Pharma Heusden-Zolder(distribution). The joint-venture is specialized in the development of a line of qualitative nutritional supplements.

Today, may 19th, VOKA (Vlaams Economisch Verbond, or Flemish Economic Union) launched it's Health Community. The aim of this community is to achieve cross-border collaborations for more entrepreneurship in the health care sector.

Just one month after it's announcement that it will build a new distribution centre dedicated to pharma, the logistics group H. Essers (headquarters in Genk) managed to secure a new (transport)contract with Baxter and UCB. Group H. Essers was, among other reasons, chosen for its expertise in transports under controlled conditions.

Together with representatives from Flanders’ Care, LifeTechLimburg organized an infosession on the Flanders’ Care call for demonstration projects.
We were very pleased to see that a number of projects that were presented during Zorgidee, also submitted a proposal for this call. Submission of this call has been closed by Flanders' Care. We will keep you informed.
Spring is traditionally the time of the two major life science fairs in the region: Knowledge for Growth (the largest regional life sciences fair in Flanders) and Biomedica, the largest Euregional Life Sciences congress). LifeTech Limburg succesfully participated at both fairs with its own stand.

Today, may 2nd the Flemish minister for innovation, Ingrid Lieten announced that extra budget will be made available for innovation. The 2011 budget available for science and innovation will increase with an additional 65 million euro.

On the 27th of April, a Chinese delegation of Beijing Pharma and Biotech Center (BPBC) visited BIOMED and Bioville. BPBC is a Beijing municipal governmental agency, dedicated to stimulating innovation, and promoting industrial development for the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.

Based on input by Marc Vandeput, Deputy Economy of the province of Limburg, the regional TV station TVLimburg made a series on the development of health care economics in Limburg. Besides illustrations of the socio-economic potential, attention was also given to various forms of innovations in healthcare: process-oriented innovations and conceptual innovations. Finally, the role and importance of the provincial foundation LSM (Limburg Strong Brand) in financing these innovations was highlighted.
One of the strongest growth sectors in Limburg, but also outside the provincial boundaries is that of the life sciences. But what exactly are life sciences and what do they investigate? And what is the purpose of LifeTechLimburg. The purpose of the sector is clear: to improve our quality of life. We went to the university campus, and by interviewing the chairman of LifeTechLimburg we figured out what is happening in the industry of the future and how LifeTechLimburg contributes to these developments. Finally we also interviewed Koenraad Kunnen, EMC medical instruments a niece example of new forms of treatments for injuries.
On Thursday 30 May 2013, FlandersBio will organise the 9th edition of its annual life science convention Knowledge for Growth in Ghent.
The leading interdisciplinary congress in Life Sciences organised within the Top Technology Region takes place in Aachen, Germany.
