That Hasselt University and the three university colleges PHL, KHLim and Xios performe excellent research is already known. But the quality and excellence of the medical-scientifical research performed by our hospitals was perhaps less well known. Recently the results of some of these research projects were published in various national and international media.

LifeTechLimburg, together with 29 Flemish companies and organizations, will join
FlandersBio and
FIT to the
BIO International Convention. This convention is the largest global event for the biotech industry, taking place from 27-30 June 2011 in Washington, US.
During the same period, a delegation with Prince Filip will visit the United States. The biotech sector is one of the target sectors of this mission with - a.o. - a visit to the Bio Convention.

Recently
Vividlinks.eu celebrated its first anniversary. The Life Sciences Career Community, aims at strengthening the cross border labour market. Key element in the strategy is transparency. With the Euregio Meuse Rhine as the geographic epicentre of the portal, already 250 life sciences companies created their profile and present themselves on the website.

Today, may 19th, VOKA (Vlaams Economisch Verbond, or Flemish Economic Union) launched it's Health Community. The aim of this community is to achieve cross-border collaborations for more entrepreneurship in the health care sector.
As the aims and activities of the Voka Health Care platform are highly compatible with the recent initiatives that LifeTechLimburg has started with among others
Zorgidee/Care Idea, contacts and collaborations have been initiated between the two organizations. To be continued

Just one month after it's announcement that it will build a new distribution centre dedicated to pharma, the logistics group H. Essers (headquarters in Genk) managed to secure a new (transport)contract with Baxter and UCB. Group H. Essers was, among other reasons, chosen for its expertise in transports under controlled conditions.

Spring is traditionally the time of the two major life science fairs in the region: Knowledge for Growth (the largest regional life sciences fair in Flanders) and Biomedica, the largest Euregional Life Sciences congress). LifeTech Limburg succesfully participated at both fairs with its own stand.

Today, may 2nd the Flemish minister for innovation, Ingrid Lieten announced that extra budget will be made available for innovation. The 2011 budget available for science and innovation will increase with an additional 65 million euro.
Secondly, the flemish governement that, starting from 2012, it will invest additional funding in research development.
As some of our companies such as Apitope, Amakem, Seps Pharma and Q-Care have already received IWT funding, we are sure that our life sciences companies will benefit from this decision. Companies that are interested in submitting an IWT application can count on the teams of LifeTechLimburg and the innovation Centre Limburg for more advice and counseling.

On the 27th of April, a Chinese delegation of Beijing Pharma and Biotech Center (BPBC) visited BIOMED and Bioville. BPBC is a Beijing municipal governmental agency, dedicated to stimulating innovation, and promoting industrial development for the pharmaceutical and biotech industry.
The meeting focused on the possible research/technical transfer from BIOMED to China and the possibilities concerning future collaboration.
